City Power is currently working around the clock in a bid to restore power in suburbs that were affected when a substation ignited this weekend.
CITY POWER DEALING WITH SUBSTATION FIRE
The Johannesburg electricity utility’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena said firefighters were on site extinguishing the blaze.
Initially, Mangena said a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire and the actual extent of the damage had to be conducted once the fire had been extinguished.
THE CAUSE OF THE DISASTER
Later today, Sunday, 3 December, City Power discovered that a suspected 88kv oil-filled cable could’ve been the cause of the substation fire.
Once this has been completed and found to be the correct spot, the following process will commence:
- The exposure of the faulty cable spot
- Further testing if the faulty cable spot
- Flush out the contaminated oil (This process may take days)
SUBURBS AFFECTED BY THE FIRE
The fire has interrupted the power supply to the following areas:
- Bellevue East
- Houghton Estate
- Linksfield Ridge
- Observatory Ext
- Yeoville and surrounding areas.
Mangena said the estimated time of restoration has not yet been established.
“However we will keep customers informed on developments. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” he said.
This is a developing story. An update will be published as and when new information is available.
